About Louise Thomas
Louise Thomas is a Lower Hutt-based artist and nature photographer whose work celebrates the richness of the natural world through both paint and lens. Working predominantly in oil, her paintings explore themes of wildlife, portraiture, and landscape. Stylistically, Louise moves fluidly between cubism, expressionism, and realism, maintaining a distinctly colourful painterly quality that captures both form and emotion.
Her artistic achievements include receiving the Judge's Choice and People's Choice awards in the 2024 Hutt Art Society Annual Exhibition, followed by Best Representational in 2025. Louise's wildlife photography, and background as a science writer and editor, complements her painting practice, combining artistic sensitivity with scientific observation. Her images have featured in numerous science publications, on the cover of the Annual New Zealand Bird Survey, are used in the Merlin Bird ID App, and appear on park and reserve signage.
Through both her art and photography, Louise aims to evoke appreciation and awareness of the beauty and fragility of the natural world. Her work invites viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the environment.
