Whio whistling upstream
A whio (blue duck) whistles upstream to its mate amidst the lively, rushing waters of the Whakapapanui Stream on Mt Ruapehu. The water bounces and tumbles over boulders, reflecting the cool alpine light. Deep blues and shadows convey the stream's dynamic, wild energy. The painting captures both the motion of the water and the spirited presence of this iconic New Zealand bird.
