Selected for the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Fantastic Beasts Exhibition (December/January 2024), this work explores the cryptic nature of birds within their environment. Painted in a cubist style, the little grebe is intentionally hidden in plain sight among lily pads and reflections. As the viewer steps back, the composition resolves and the bird and plants emerge from the pattern of shapes and colour.
